Item Description

Mortal Monday, September 1993: the arcade sensation that had parents and politicians in an uproar hit home systems all at once, and the Game Gear got its own version on the same day as the Genesis and Super Nintendo. Mortal Kombat on Sega's handheld is a remarkable thing to hold, a full one-on-one tournament fighter with digitized fighters and brutal finishing moves running on 8-bit hardware.

The fighting follows Midway's arcade formula. Each warrior has punches, kicks and a set of special moves, from Scorpion's spear to Sub-Zero's freeze, and two round wins earn you the chance to finish your opponent with a Fatality, the gruesome signature move unique to each fighter. The roster is trimmed for the handheld, with Kano left out, but Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage, Raiden, Scorpion and Sub-Zero all make the trip to Shang Tsung's tournament. Learning the inputs on the Game Gear's two-button layout is its own challenge, and landing a Fatality on that little screen feels like a real achievement.

Mortal Kombat changed the fighting-game business and sparked the debate that led to the industry's age ratings, and the Sega versions played a big part in that story. Sega shipped its home ports with the gore toned down by default but unlockable with a secret code, a choice that became playground legend and gave Sega's versions a reputation with players who wanted the arcade experience.

Today, the Game Gear version is a fascinating artifact of that moment: proof of how hard every platform pushed to get a piece of the Mortal Kombat phenomenon, and a fun, pocket-sized way to revisit the tournament where the series began.

About the game

Mortal Kombat is a side-scrolling fighting game. Fighting is set as one-on-one combat, allowing each player to perform a variety of punches, kicks, and special moves in order to defeat their opponent. When the opponent faces their second round loss, the winner can perform a finishing move called a "Fatality" on the loser. The Fatality is a move unique to each fighter that graphically kills the loser in a blood-soaked finale.
