Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. For the specifics, look to the photos — they're of this exact item. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Moon Patrol is one of the first arcade games that looks like it is moving through a real landscape. As your lunar buggy rolls across the surface, distant mountains drift by slowly, closer hills glide past a little faster and the cratered ground races beneath your wheels. That layered parallax scrolling helped introduce a technique that would define side-scrolling games for the next decade, and the Atari 5200 version reproduces it, with its programmers changing scroll speeds at specific lines of the screen to pull off the effect.

Designed at Irem by Takashi Nishiyama, who went on to create Kung-Fu Master, and released in North American arcades by Williams in 1982, the game casts you as a Luna City police officer on patrol. The buggy fires two ways at once, forward to blast the rocks in your path and straight up to knock flying saucers out of the sky, while you jump to clear craters, including the fresh ones that UFO bombs punch into the road ahead. Juggling the ground and the sky at the same time is what gives Moon Patrol its hectic, satisfying rhythm.

Progress is measured in lettered zones from A to Z, with checkpoints closing out each stretch and a time-based bonus that shows if you have beaten the record for that leg. Finish the Beginner Course and the Champion Course follows, adding missiles and space plants to the mix. Atari's in-house team of Scott Smith, Courtney Granner and Robert Vieira kept most of the coin-op's graphics and sounds, along with the catchy tune that runs nonstop under the action, and the result is widely praised among the game's home versions.

Those checkpoints made Moon Patrol unusually welcoming for its time, letting players push a little further each session instead of starting from scratch. Add the groundbreaking visuals and a soundtrack that sticks in your head, and it is a richly rewarding arcade conversion for the 5200.
