Item Description

There is a particular sound to baseball on the original PlayStation, and in MLB 2001 it belongs to Vin Scully. The longtime voice of the Dodgers calls the play-by-play with Dave Campbell alongside him on color, and their unhurried, conversational rhythm gives every at-bat the feel of a summer broadcast drifting out of a radio on the back porch. Chipper Jones of the Atlanta Braves fronts the box, which tells you exactly which era of the National League you are stepping into.

Sony's in-house sports team built this one, released under the 989 Sports label, as a straight-ahead simulation rather than an arcade slugfest. Real Major League teams and rosters fill the schedule, the camera work and on-screen overlays borrow from television presentation, and pitching and hitting are approachable enough that a quick exhibition comes together in minutes. Split-screen support means a second player can take the other dugout, which is still the best way to settle an argument about whose team was better in 2000.

Critics were kind to it at the time. GamePro singled out the top-notch sound and solid controls and judged it a more balanced, realistic game of baseball than its big rivals, EA's Triple Play and 3DO's High Heat, even if it was never the flashiest-looking of the three. That was a crowded, competitive moment for baseball on the PlayStation, and MLB 2001 earned its place in it on feel rather than fireworks.

Today the appeal is the snapshot. Released at the start of the 2000 season, it preserves a turn-of-the-millennium big-league roster, a Hall of Fame broadcaster in the booth and the clean, readable presentation of late-era PlayStation sports games. Slot it into a 989 Sports run or a shelf of PS1 baseball, and spend an evening playing a season the way it looked and sounded back then.
