Game only: the cartridge in a protective holder, no box or manual. The photos are of this exact cartridge — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

There is no winning Missile Command, only holding out a little longer. Streaks of incoming warheads crawl down the screen toward six defenseless cities, and your only answer is a crosshair and a limited supply of counter-missiles that bloom into expanding fireballs. Lead the target just right and one blast can swallow several warheads at once. Misjudge it and a city disappears.

Dave Theurer designed the 1980 arcade original for Atari at the height of Cold War anxiety, and its grim premise and relentless pace made it one of the defining coin-ops of the era. The Atari 5200 version comes from Atari's computer conversion, which was already very close to the arcade, and the biggest change is structural: the coin-op's three missile bases become a single launcher, because the computer version was built around one fire button. That makes shot placement and ammunition even more precious, since every counter-missile comes from the same spot and every wasted shot is felt.

The 5200 suits the game in a way few consoles of the time could. Its analog, non-centering joystick lets the crosshair glide across the sky and stay where you leave it, which works in your favor here more than in almost any other game on the system. The game also works with the Pro-Line Trak-Ball that Atari released for the 5200 in 1983, bringing back the feel of the arcade's rolling ball. As the waves climb, the attacks come faster and denser, and surviving becomes a matter of reading the whole sky at a glance and committing to your shots.

Few games capture the arcade era's mix of simplicity and dread as well as this one. It is a perfect five-minute game and a surprisingly deep score chase, and with its analog control and Trak-Ball support it feels right at home on the 5200.
