Item Description

It is 1994, Power Rangers mania is at full boil, and Sega's answer for its CD add-on is not a sprite-based brawler but the show itself. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers for the Sega CD, produced under the Sega TruVideo banner by Orion Technologies, is built from footage of nine episodes of the television series, footage that in turn drew on the Japanese Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger.

Play comes down to timing. Button prompts flash over the action and you hit them on cue as the Rangers fight; miss one and your health meter drops. There are hidden opportunities too, moments where pressing a button without any prompt earns extra points, and at the end of each level your score is tallied to refill health and, if you have played well, award an extra life. It turns a Saturday-morning episode into a test of reflexes in a way that is easy to pick up and surprisingly tense on the harder settings.

The footage had to be cut down hard to fit, so the five-part "Green With Evil" serial, the storyline that introduced Tommy as the Green Ranger, survives as four short segments. Difficulty decides how much of the game you see. Of its ten levels, six and seven open up only on normal and hard, and the final three are reserved for hard mode, which gives determined players a real reason to master the timing rather than coast through on easy.

As a game it is closer to an interactive episode than a fighter, and that is exactly the charm. The Genesis and Super Nintendo cartridges reimagined the Rangers as sprites, while this disc put the actual show on a home console at a time when that alone felt like magic. For a Rangers devotee, it is the most direct way the original series ever reached Sega hardware, and a fascinating snapshot of how hard the Sega CD leaned on full-motion video at its peak.

About the game

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is a video game for the Sega CD console. It was produced by Sega TruVideo and released by Sega in US and Europe in 1994. The game consists mostly of footage from nine episodes of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers TV series, which featured footage from Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger. Gameplay requires the player to press certain buttons at precise moments throughout the game as they appear on screen. If the player misses, the health meter will drop. However, there are points in the game where the player can press a button unprompted for extra points. At the end of each level, the player's progress is tallied. The points earned will be used to refill the player's health meter and can even score an extra life. Footage from episodes of the television series was used for the game. This footage was heavily cut down for disc space and level length. As a result, the five-part "Green With Evil" serial was turned into four small segments for the game. The game has a total of ten levels. Levels six and seven are playable only on normal and hard modes, and levels eight, nine, and ten are playable only on hard mode.
