Item Description

Your career begins behind the wheel of a New York City taxi. That is the setup of Midnight Club: Street Racing: a cab driver hears about an underground racing club that owns the city after dark, earns a seat at the table, and starts winning faster cars off the racers he beats. Every named rival drives a car you can claim, each in three increasingly potent versions, and climbing from a lumbering cab to a fully built street machine gives the game a terrific sense of progress.

The real star is the city itself. Midnight Club was among the first racers to hand you an open, living urban map rather than a closed circuit, and its New York and London are packed with landmarks like Times Square, Central Park, Big Ben and Tower Bridge. Races are checkpoint runs through live traffic, so knowing which side street dodges a jammed avenue matters as much as raw speed. Win the New York and London championships and you earn a shot at the world champion, Anika, whose father builds concept cars, and beating her puts his creation in your garage. Outside the career, Arcade mode offers Head to Head, Waypoint, Capture the Flag and free-roaming Cruise, all playable by two players on split screen.

Developed by Angel Studios and published by Rockstar Games, it arrived in October 2000 as a PlayStation 2 launch title, and it earned a reputation as one of the best reasons to own the console in its first months. IGN named it its racing game of 2000. Angel Studios later became Rockstar San Diego, and everything the series grew into, from the customization of Midnight Club 3 to the sprawling Los Angeles of the later games, starts with this disc. The Greatest Hits label marks Sony's reissue line for PS2 games that sold strongly, a sign of how many early adopters took this game home alongside their new console.

Played today, it is a snapshot of the PS2's launch window: a little raw, very fast, and brimming with the idea that a whole city could be your racetrack. Start here to see where Rockstar's street-racing series began.
