Item Description

Somewhere beneath Moscow, the filter on your gas mask is running out, your flashlight needs another crank, and the only currency anyone trusts is a handful of bullets. Metro Redux gathers both of 4A Games' journeys into that world, Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light, rebuilt in an upgraded version of the studio's 4A Engine for PlayStation 4. For PlayStation players it was also the first chance to play 2033 at all, since the original had launched on PC and Xbox 360.

Both games are first-person shooters that care more about dread than body count. You play Artyom, a young man from VDNKh station, and survival comes down to managing scraps: filters for the poisoned surface, a hand-cranked charger for your light, and ammunition that doubles as money. Pre-war military-grade rounds are the strongest bullets you can load and the cash station traders accept, so every hard fight forces a small, painful choice. Stealth is a real option, with a wrist gauge showing how visible you are, and the human factions battling over the tunnels are often as dangerous as the mutants above them.

Redux is more than a resolution bump. Metro 2033 was rebuilt with Last Light's refinements to stealth and gunplay, and both games offer two ways to play: Survival, which leans into scarce resources and horror, and Spartan, which plays more like a traditional action shooter. Ranger Mode strips away most of the HUD and makes every bullet count, which is how many fans insist the series should be experienced, and Last Light Redux folds in the add-on content released for the original game. On PS4 both campaigns were built to run at a smooth 60 frames per second.

Underneath it all is Dmitry Glukhovsky's novel Metro 2033, whose world of feuding station-states, Spartan Rangers and the mysterious Dark Ones gives these games a literary weight few shooters attempt. Last Light carries Artyom's story forward, and both games quietly track small acts of mercy and attention that decide which ending you earn. Played back to back they form one long journey through the dark, and Redux is the cleanest way to take it on PS4 before stepping out into the open world of Metro Exodus.
