Item Description

What if the person best suited to rule is the one the whole kingdom has been taught to despise? Metaphor: ReFantazio asks that question from its opening hours. It is the first full-scale fantasy RPG from Atlus's Studio Zero, led by Persona 3, 4 and 5 director Katsura Hashino alongside character designer Shigenori Soejima and composer Shoji Meguro, and it took home Best RPG, Best Narrative and Best Art Direction at The Game Awards 2024.

The United Kingdom of Euchronia has lost its king to assassination, and the heir to the throne lies under a curse. Instead of an orderly succession, magic left behind by the late king turns the crown into a contest: whoever wins the people's support becomes ruler. You play a young member of the persecuted Elda tribe, travelling with the fairy Gallica to break the prince's curse, and you are soon swept into a campaign against the ruthless Louis Guiabern. Euchronia's many tribes, its prejudices and its fear-driven politics give the story real bite, and the monsters stalking the land, unsettlingly called "humans," hint that something about this world is deeply wrong.

Persona players will feel at home, and then the game branches out. Days tick forward on a calendar toward election milestones, so every free afternoon is a choice between dungeon diving and spending time with Followers, companions whose bonds unlock new strengths. Combat begins in real time, where you can cut down weaker foes on the field or stagger stronger ones for an advantage, then shifts into a turn-based system that rewards exploiting weaknesses with extra actions. The Archetype system is the star: party members can switch between dozens of classes, from Seeker and Knight to Mage and Warrior, carrying skills from one to the next, and they can pool their Archetypes into powerful Synthesis attacks.

Soejima's painterly character art, menus as stylish as anything in Persona 5 and Meguro's chant-driven score give the world a grandeur all its own. Crossing the continent aboard the Gauntlet Runner, a towering walking vehicle that doubles as the party's mobile base, turns every trip into an expedition. This is Hashino's team building a brand-new world with everything they learned from Persona, and it is a fantasy epic worth getting in on from the very first chapter.
