Item Description

Metal Gear Survive begins in the final moments of Ground Zeroes, as XOF's assault reduces Mother Base to rubble and a wormhole tears open in the sky. Soldiers caught in the chaos are pulled into Dite, an alternate dimension smothered in a toxic Dust, and you play one of them, a survivor who has to gather enough Kuban Energy to find a way home. It is a strange, bold spin-off, and Konami's 2018 release is the first Metal Gear made after Hideo Kojima's departure.

Survival is the core of it. Hunger and thirst have to be managed by hunting, cooking meat and boiling water, contaminated food brings sickness, and every trip into the Dust drains your oxygen tank, turning each expedition into a calculated push into the unknown. The zombie-like Wanderers are the constant threat, and the game builds on the Fox Engine movement and stealth of The Phantom Pain while adding fences, barricades and crafted defenses that let you funnel enemies into kill zones instead of fighting them in the open.

Base building ties the loop together. Back at camp you grow food, craft weapons and gear, and put rescued survivors to work, while defense missions have you guarding a wormhole digger as waves of Wanderers converge on it. Co-op Salvage missions team up to four players for those wave-defense set pieces, and they are where the game's mix of preparation and panic comes alive.

At launch it required a constant online connection, even for the solo campaign, and it divided critics, but players who stick with its slow opening hours find a tense resource-management game hiding inside the Metal Gear shell. For anyone collecting the series, it is the oddest experiment in the franchise and the only entry where the enemy is a horde rather than an army.
