Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection, released as a PlayStation 3 exclusive in 2013, gathers every mainline Metal Gear game Hideo Kojima directed from 1987 through 2012, and it is the closest thing the series has ever had to a complete history in a single box.

The span is remarkable. You can start with the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, the top-down MSX2 games that invented Kojima's brand of stealth, then follow Snake through Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Peace Walker in their HD editions. The collection closes with Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Solid Snake's final mission, in its Trophy-supported version. The original PlayStation Metal Gear Solid and its VR Missions companion were part of the package too, though they were delivered as PlayStation Network downloads rather than on disc.

Played in order, the games tell one of the strangest and most ambitious stories in the medium. You watch Big Boss rise from a loyal soldier in a Soviet jungle to the founder of his own army, then see the long shadow he casts over Solid Snake, Raiden and the shadowy Patriots. Along the way the series invents and reinvents itself: survival camouflage and CQC in Snake Eater, base-building and soldier recruitment in Peace Walker, crowded three-way battlefields in MGS4. The collection also includes motion-comic adaptations of the Metal Gear Solid graphic novels by Kris Oprisko and artist Ashley Wood, and the set was known for its 100-page art book showcasing Yoji Shinkawa's artwork and the series' promotional history.
