Item Description

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Plus took the most addictive idea in Portable Ops, building a private army one recruited soldier at a time, and spun it into a standalone package devoted to squad battles. Kojima Productions released it on the PSP in 2007 as a companion to the original, and where Portable Ops told Naked Snake's 1970 story, Plus is about the roster: the soldiers you collect, train and send into the field.

The recruit list grew to well over a hundred characters, and the headline additions were pulled from across the saga, including Old Snake from Metal Gear Solid 4, Raiden in his cybernetic MGS4 form and Roy Campbell. Infinity Mission is the single-player heart of the disc, a story-free mode that sends your squad on mission after mission to grow its strength and add new recruits, and fresh missions and beginner tutorials round out the solo content.

Multiplayer was the main event when it launched. Up to six players could battle across more than a dozen maps, including a recreation of the Rex hangar from the original Metal Gear Solid, in deathmatch, team deathmatch, capture missions and a new shooting-range contest where teams race to rack up points on targets. Winning a match let you take one of your opponent's soldiers, and a trade feature let players swap recruits. The game was built around online play whose servers have long since gone dark, so today it is best appreciated as a piece of the PSP Metal Gear story rather than a live online game.

For collectors working through Kojima Productions' handheld output, Portable Ops Plus sits between Portable Ops and Peace Walker and shows the series experimenting with the recruitment systems that Peace Walker and The Phantom Pain would later build into Mother Base.
