Item Description

Deep inside a nuclear weapons facility on an Alaskan island, a masked psychic reads your memory card, comments on the other games you have been playing, then dares you to fight him with your controller plugged into the wrong port. Nobody who played Metal Gear Solid in 1998 forgot the Psycho Mantis fight, and it is only one of dozens of moments that made Hideo Kojima's PlayStation debut for Solid Snake feel unlike anything else on the console.

Snake is pulled out of retirement and sent to Shadow Moses, where his old unit FOXHOUND has gone rogue under the command of the mysterious Liquid Snake and is threatening a nuclear strike with Metal Gear REX, a walking tank that can launch warheads from anywhere. Getting inside means thinking like a spy. Guards follow their routes and react to noise, footprints in the snow can give you away, and the soliton radar, a well-timed knock on a wall or a humble cardboard box can be worth more than any gun. The Codec keeps you connected to Colonel Campbell, Meryl, the nervous engineer Otacon and the rest of the support team, whose radio conversations carry as much of the story as the cutscenes do.

The boss gallery is legendary. Revolver Ocelot's hostage duel, Vulcan Raven's tank assault and his showdown in a freezing warehouse, the long-range sniper battle with Sniper Wolf, the eerie Cyborg Ninja and the final clash with REX each test a different skill, and several break the fourth wall in ways players still talk about. Fully voiced in-engine cinematics, led by David Hayter's gravelly Snake, gave the game the scale and pacing of an action film while keeping you in control almost all the way through its two discs.

Metal Gear Solid did more than any other game to bring stealth into the mainstream, and it launched one of the great series of the PlayStation era. Its themes of genetic destiny, nuclear deterrence and soldiers who no longer know what they are fighting for still give it a weight that action games of its day rarely attempted. Playing the original on PlayStation hardware, with its wonderfully chunky polygons and moody Shadow Moses atmosphere, is the best way to experience where Solid Snake's modern legend began.

About the game

Metal Gear Solid is a stealth game created by Hideo Kojima which follows the MSX2 video games Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. Despite a transition to 3D, Metal Gear Solid's gameplay remains similar to his predecessors. The game utilizes a traditional top-down view and the player must navigate the protagonist Solid Snake through the game's areas without being detected. Detection will set off an alarm which draws armed enemies to his location. Conversations with Snake's allies and cutscenes are used extensively to advance the plot and gain more insight into it. Metal Gear Solid is regarded as one of the greatest and most important video games of all time, and helped popularize the stealth genre and in-engine cinematic cutscenes.
