Item Description

A storm lashes the Hudson River, a lone figure leaps from the George Washington Bridge onto a tanker below, and Metal Gear Solid 2 opens with one of the most celebrated prologues of its generation. Hideo Kojima's sequel to the PlayStation classic was a showcase for what the PS2 could do, with rain streaking across the deck, guards who radio for backup and sweep rooms as a team, and a level of environmental detail that stunned players at the time. Substance is the expanded version of that game, adding a mountain of extra content alongside the full story of Sons of Liberty.

The story begins with Solid Snake aboard the tanker before shifting two years later to the Big Shell, an offshore cleanup facility seized by terrorists, where rookie operative Raiden takes the lead. What follows is a twisting, deliberately disorienting thriller about information, identity and control, featuring Revolver Ocelot, Solidus Snake and a gallery of unforgettable bosses: the bomb-loving Fatman, the bullet-deflecting Fortune and the knife-wielding Vamp. Harry Gregson-Williams's cinematic score gives the whole thing blockbuster scale.

Substance builds on all of that with hundreds of bite-sized VR and Alternative Missions, from sneaking and weapons drills to first-person target practice, photographing targets, bomb disposal and all-out destruction, plus a variety mode full of oddball characters and twists. Five Snake Tales drop Solid Snake into fresh scenarios across the tanker and the Big Shell, told through text rather than cutscenes, and a skateboarding mode lets you grind your way around the Big Shell for good measure.

Released first on Xbox and then on PlayStation 2, Substance gave PS2 owners the complete Sons of Liberty experience along with a huge stack of extra challenges. It is the most complete way to play MGS2 on original hardware, and a window into a game whose ideas about truth and information in a digital age look sharper with every passing year.
