Most action games ask you to fight enemies. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance asks you to take them apart. Within minutes of starting, Raiden is sprinting up the side of a Metal Gear RAY, slicing it to pieces in slow motion, and the game never really lets up from there. Developed by PlatinumGames, the studio behind Bayonetta and Vanquish, and published by Konami, it began life inside Kojima Productions before Platinum took over and turned it into one of the most electrifying action games of the PlayStation 3 era. If you came in expecting stealth, Revengeance throws that rulebook out the window and dares you to keep up.

You play as Raiden, the cyborg ninja who divided fans in Metal Gear Solid 2 and won them back with his showstopping turn in Metal Gear Solid 4. Here he finally gets a game of his own. The signature mechanic is Blade Mode, which freezes time and lets you cut along any angle you choose, carving enemies and scenery into as many pieces as you can manage. Its partner is Zandatsu, "cut and take": slice a cyborg open at just the right spot, rip out its glowing spine and absorb it to refill your health and energy. There is no block button, either. Parrying means attacking directly into an enemy's strike at the right moment, which turns every fight into an aggressive, rhythmic duel.

The boss fights are the stuff of legend. The Desperado Enforcement mercenaries, including Mistral, Monsoon, Sundowner and the rival swordsman Jetstream Sam, each get a battle that plays like a set piece, and the final confrontation with Senator Armstrong has become an internet phenomenon all on its own. Jamie Christopherson's soundtrack is a huge part of that reputation. Its vocal tracks kick in at the climax of each boss fight, and songs like "Rules of Nature" and "It Has to Be This Way" have taken on a life far beyond the game.

The story swings wildly from political satire to philosophical monologues on the nature of war, all wrapped in the kind of gloriously over-the-top presentation only a Metal Gear game could get away with. It is short, sharp and endlessly replayable, built for players who want to master a combat system rather than simply finish it, and it is the most purely thrilling way to spend time with Raiden on any console.
