Item Description
The war against Sigma heads for the Moon in Mega Man X8. With Earth battered by Sigma's earlier invasions, humanity pins its hopes on the Jakob Project, an orbital elevator built to carry a new generation of Reploids skyward and begin colonizing the lunar surface. Then Sigma corrupts the DNA of those New Generation Reploids, they turn on the humans they were built to serve, and X, Zero and Axl have to follow the trail all the way up the elevator and into space.
After X7's full-3D experiment, X8 brings the series back to its side-scrolling roots with polygonal 2.5D visuals, and it plays far closer to the snappy action of the classic games. You choose two of the three hunters for each stage and can switch between them at any time, and when the shared gauge fills they team up for a screen-clearing Double Attack. X fights with his buster and collectible armor, Zero carves through enemies with his saber and the weapons he takes from defeated bosses, and Axl's rapid-fire guns and Copy Shot let him borrow enemies' forms.
The eight Mavericks are a memorable bunch, including Optic Sunflower, Bamboo Pandamonium and Avalanche Yeti, and the rare metals you collect in stages can be traded for new parts and upgrades. The Hunters' navigators Alia, Layer and Pallette each offer their own advice over the radio, and longtime villain Vile turns up again to make life miserable, while the mysterious Lumine sits at the center of the New Generation's story.
Critics and fans generally welcomed X8 as a strong recovery after X7, and it is still the most recent mainline Mega Man X game, which makes it the closing chapter, for now, of the saga that began on the Super NES in 1993. On the PlayStation 2 it is the place to see X, Zero and Axl working as a full trio with the side-scrolling feel restored, and the natural partner to X7 on the shelf.
