Two heroes, two very different ways to play, and one war that pulls them apart. Mega Man X4 lets you choose at the very start between X, with his charged X-Buster and the weapons he copies from defeated Mavericks, and Zero, who fights up close with the Z-Saber and learns new sword techniques instead of new guns. Built from the ground up for the 32-bit consoles rather than carried over from the Super NES, it is the entry many fans name as the best of the entire X series, and it is easy to see why.
The story is the most dramatic the series had attempted up to that point. After the floating city Sky Lagoon comes crashing down, the Maverick Hunters are ordered to deal with the Repliforce, a proud Reploid army under the General and the Colonel that refuses to submit and declares independence instead. Zero ends up on the opposite side from the Colonel's sister Iris, someone he cares for deeply, and his route builds to a moment that still stings for longtime fans. Anime cutscenes and voice acting give it a big, earnest energy, and the English dub's heartfelt delivery has become a fond in-joke in the fan community.
The eight Mavericks are a memorable lot, from Web Spider and Split Mushroom to Cyber Peacock, Storm Owl, Frost Walrus, Slash Beast, Jet Stingray and the fiery Magma Dragoon, and their stages are bigger and more varied than before. Jet Stingray's level sends you racing across the sea on a Ride Chaser, while Cyber Peacock's cyberspace stage grades you on speed. X hunts down Dr. Light's capsules to build his Fourth Armor piece by piece, while Zero can't use armor at all and instead earns techniques like his air dash and new saber strikes from each boss. Because the two characters play so differently, finishing the game with both feels like two campaigns rather than one with a costume swap.
The sprite work is lush, the soundtrack hits hard and the controls feel immaculate on a PlayStation pad. For many players this was their first full campaign as Zero, and the conflicted, tragic Zero who emerges here shaped how Capcom wrote him for years, all the way to his own Mega Man Zero series. If you want to know why fans talk about the PlayStation era of Mega Man X with such affection, X4 is the reason.
Mega Man X4, known as Rockman X4 in Japan, is the fourth game from the Mega Man X series. It was the second game in the series to be released on the Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation (although it is the first original game; Mega Man X3 was ported to the systems), released in 1997 (and also re-released onto PlayStation as part of its greatest hits in 2002). It was later ported to the PC in 1998 and then re-released as part of the Mega Man X Collection
