Mega Man Legends 2 is one of the most ambitious and best-loved entries in the Mega Man franchise, taking the Blue Bomber out of the side-scrolling world and into a fully realized 3D action-adventure that plays more like an RPG than anything in the series before it. Released by Capcom for the PlayStation in 2000, it puts players back in the shoes of Mega Man Volnutt as Roll and the crew of the Flutter join the hunt for the Mother Lode, a legendary treasure thought to be an infinite energy source, on an expedition that unravels a mystery tied to Mega Man's own origins. It is a story that hooks you early and does not let go. The Legends series always had a personality all its own, and this sequel pushed it further with a bigger world spread across several islands and more complex ruins to explore.

Gameplay blends third-person shooting, ruin exploration and surprisingly deep customization. Buster Parts tune Mega Man's arm cannon across attack, rapid-fire, range and energy, while Roll builds special weapons out of otherwise unusable items found in the ruins, and Digger licenses have to be earned to open the restricted dig sites. Roll, Data, the mechanical monkey who holds Mega Man's original memories, and the rest of the crew return with expanded roles, while the Bonnes, those lovably scheming pirate siblings Teisel, Tron and Bon, continue to steal every scene they are in. The dialogue, the humor and the emotional beats all land harder here than in the first game, and the final chapter still resonates with fans decades later.

What gives Legends 2 its special place in the series is that its story was never concluded. It ends on an unresolved cliffhanger, and a third entry, Mega Man Legends 3, was announced for the Nintendo 3DS in 2010 and then cancelled in 2011, leaving the story on an open note that the fanbase has never quite let go of. That passion has only deepened appreciation for what this game accomplished on the original PlayStation, and it remains a cult classic with soul, style and a story that still sparks conversation.
