"Jack in! MegaMan, Execute!" For a generation of Game Boy Advance players, that line meant a battle was about to begin. Mega Man Battle Network reimagined the Blue Bomber for the internet age: Lan Hikari is a schoolkid in a near-future world where every device is networked, and MegaMan.EXE is the NetNavi living in his PET, ready to jack into nearly any machine in town to fight viruses from the inside. Capcom's Legacy Collection brings all ten mainline Battle Network games to PlayStation 4.
Battles are where the series earned its devoted following. MegaMan moves across his half of a grid of panels while enemies hold the other, and each turn you pick battle chips from the Custom screen, drawn from a thirty-chip folder you build yourself. Chips cover swords, cannons, bombs, area attacks and summoned Navis, and entering the right chips in the right order triggers Program Advances, devastating combos that reward deep folder knowledge. It is real-time action layered over deckbuilding strategy, a hybrid that still feels unlike anything else.
Across the ten games the formula keeps evolving. Battle Network 2 added Style Changes, 3 brought the Navi Customizer's block-fitting upgrades, 4 and 5 introduced Soul Unison with allied Navis, and 6 closed the saga with the Cross System and Beast Out forms. From the third game on, each entry came in two versions with different chips and story content, and every one is here: Battle Network 3 White and Blue, 4 Red Sun and Blue Moon, 5 Team ProtoMan and Team Colonel, and 6 Cybeast Gregar and Cybeast Falzar.
Capcom added welcome extras on top. Buster MAX Mode supercharges the buster so story progress never stalls on a tough fight, the Patch Cards that once modified Battle Network 4 through 6 are built in, and an extensive art gallery celebrates the series' look. The collection was also built with online battles and chip trading, a modern answer to the link-cable sessions these games were designed around. With every version gathered on one console, this is the definitive way to revisit Lan and MegaMan's adventures.
