Item Description

December 7, 1941. Corporal Joe Griffin wakes below decks aboard the USS California as the first Japanese bombs fall on Pearl Harbor, and within minutes he is fighting fires, manning an anti-aircraft gun and defending Battleship Row. That opening is still remembered as one of the most dramatic first levels of its generation, and it sets the tone for Medal of Honor: Rising Sun, EA Los Angeles' 2003 move of the series from Europe to the Pacific theater.

From there the campaign travels across the war in the Pacific: blowing the Calumpit Bridge in the Philippines, silencing the artillery known as "Pistol Pete" on Guadalcanal, slipping into a secret Axis summit in Singapore, then into Burma's gold-smelting temples, a gold train in Thailand and finally Commander Masataka Shima's supercarrier. Running through it all is a personal thread: Joe's younger brother Donnie is overrun at Calumpit and presumed dead, giving the mission a stake beyond the battle lines.

Rising Sun was built for company. A two-player co-op campaign lets a friend fight beside you on the same screen, with either player able to respawn while the other stays alive, and offline multiplayer supports up to four players with optional AI bots. Online deathmatch was popular in its day, though those servers shut down in 2007. Christopher Lennertz composed the sweeping orchestral score, and the game won the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences award for original music composition, and the game pairs its action with period footage and unlockable interviews with Pacific veterans.

Reviews were mixed beyond that spectacular opening, but the PlayStation 2 version sold strongly, and its Pacific setting gives it a different flavor from the European campaigns of Frontline and Allied Assault. It is the Medal of Honor for a co-op night, and the one to play for Pearl Harbor.
