Item Description

Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX took the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater formula, swapped the board for a bike and proved the trick-chaining magic worked just as well on two wheels. It was built on a modified version of the Tony Hawk engine, and when Activision launched its Activision O2 action-sports label in 2001, this was the very first release. You ride as the Condor himself, the ten-time World Vert Champion whose inventions reshaped vert riding, or as one of seven other pros including Rick Thorne, Dennis McCoy and Mike Escamilla, each with their own stats, bikes and trick sets.

There are more than 200 tricks and combos to learn, signature moves included, spread across ten levels of street, vert and dirt courses. Career mode will feel instantly familiar to Hawk fans: two-minute runs hunting for magazine covers, with a couple of judged medal competitions along the way. Single Session is a pure high-score sprint, Free Ride lets you explore without a clock, and split-screen multiplayer covers Trick Attack, Horse and Graffiti. The Park Editor is a real bonus, letting you build your own layout from ramps and rails, name your gaps and then ride it solo or against a friend.

The secrets are pure 2001: Tony Hawk himself is hidden on the roster, alongside a fictional elderly rider known only as Granny. Critics liked what they played, with an 80 on Metacritic and particular praise for the trick variety and the music, and it was a runner-up for Best Music in GameSpot's 2001 awards. It arrived a few months after Acclaim's Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX, and the friendly rivalry between the two bike games is part of what makes the era so fun to revisit.

If you wore out a Tony Hawk disc and want that same addictive loop with a different flavor, Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX is the bike game from that golden stretch of action-sports gaming, and the start of a series that carried on with Pro BMX 2 the following year.
