Item Description
Capcom's Marvel fighters capture the late-'90s arcade as completely as anything ever made, and Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics finally puts the whole lineage in one place. The 2024 collection gathers seven arcade games: X-Men: Children of the Atom, Marvel Super Heroes, X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes, Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes and The Punisher, Capcom's 1993 side-scrolling beat 'em up.
Playing them in order is a crash course in how the crossover fighter grew up. Children of the Atom brought Capcom's Street Fighter craft to the X-Men with towering sprites, super jumps and air combos; Marvel Super Heroes added the Infinity Gems; the Street Fighter crossovers introduced tag teams; and the first Marvel vs. Capcom brought in partner assists. It all builds to Marvel vs. Capcom 2, a 56-character, three-on-three tag brawler where Magneto, Storm, Sentinel, Cable and Jill Valentine share a roster, set to that unmistakable jazzy soundtrack. For many fighting game players it is the high-water mark of pure arcade excess, and it spent years unavailable on current hardware before this release.
The Punisher is a welcome curiosity, a two-player beat 'em up starring Frank Castle and Nick Fury that had never received a faithful home port. The collection wraps everything in modern features, including rollback netcode built for online matches, a training mode, display options and a museum stocked with hundreds of illustrations and soundtrack selections for anyone who wants to linger over the art and music.
On PlayStation 4, it puts the entire sprite-era Marvel run on one disc, with Marvel vs. Capcom 2 as the main event and six other games that show how Capcom got there. It is the easiest way to experience these arcade games at home without hunting down long-discontinued releases or original boards.
