Within minutes of picking up the controller, you understand why people still talk about the swinging. Webs anchor to real buildings, momentum carries Spider-Man through long arcs over Manhattan's avenues, and a well-timed release can fling him over a rooftop water tower or into a dive toward the traffic below. Insomniac Games, the studio behind Ratchet & Clank, made traversal in Marvel's Spider-Man feel so good that simply getting across town became the game's first great pleasure.

This Peter Parker is twenty-three and eight years into the job, which lets the story skip the origin and get straight to the complications. The game opens with Spider-Man helping take down Wilson Fisk, and the power vacuum that follows brings Martin Li, the masked Mister Negative, and his Demons into the streets. Peter's day job in the lab of Otto Octavius gives the story a slow-building heartbreak, and by the end the Sinister Six, including Electro, Vulture, Rhino and Scorpion, are tearing the city apart. Interludes let you play as Mary Jane, now an investigative reporter, and a young Miles Morales.

Combat borrows the rhythm of the Batman: Arkham games and gives it Spider-Man's acrobatics: dodging on a spider-sense cue, yanking weapons away with webs, launching thugs into the air and pinning them to walls. Gadgets like web bombs and spider-drones add layers, and a big wardrobe of unlockable suits, each with its own power, spans comics history and the films. Between missions there are crimes to stop, old backpacks Peter stashed around the city years ago, and J. Jonah Jameson ranting about the wall-crawling "menace" on his podcast.

Marvel's Spider-Man became one of the PS4's biggest hits and the foundation for Insomniac's Spider-Man series, leading straight into Miles Morales and Marvel's Spider-Man 2. John Paesano's soaring orchestral score gives the big moments a blockbuster feel. This original release is where that version of Peter, his New York and its swinging all began.
