Item Description
Standing next to a full-size Mars rover is a very different thing from reading about one. Mars Odyssey, a 2016 virtual reality experience from Steel Wool Studios, puts you on the red planet's surface at true scale beside NASA's landers and rovers, recreated from engineering schematics and placed on terrain built from NASA's own height-map data. It is designed for PlayStation VR, and it plays less like a game than a guided field trip you get to walk around in.
A holodeck-style briefing sets the scene, comparing Martian landmarks such as Olympus Mons and Valles Marineris against features on Earth so their sheer size sinks in. Each mission then pairs a hands-on job with a short history lesson: welding fallen components back onto the Viking 2 lander at Utopia Planitia, steering the Pathfinder mission's rover to shelter before a dust storm hits, clearing dust off Opportunity's solar panels so it can draw power again, and completing a repair on Curiosity before learning what its instruments do.
It is short and calm, best treated as a stretch of awe rather than a challenge, which makes it a natural first VR experience for kids, classrooms or anyone who would rather explore than fight. It is also an early project from Steel Wool, the studio that went on to make Five Nights at Freddy's VR: Help Wanted. For space fans with a PSVR setup, it is a chance to stand where Viking, Pathfinder, Opportunity and Curiosity did their work, built from the real missions' engineering data.
