Item Description

Not every PlayStation 2 sports game is about stadium crowds and highlight reels. Mark Davis Pro Bass Challenge is about open water, the right lure and the patience to work a stretch of shoreline until something big finally hits. Mark Davis himself is the real deal, a Bassmaster Classic champion and multiple-time B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year, and he lends both his name and his presence to the game.

Natsume, the publisher best known for Harvest Moon, brought it to the PS2 in 2003 from developer SIMS, as a follow-up to Mark Davis' The Fishing Master on the Super Nintendo. The heart of the game is a tournament circuit modeled on real American bass fishing events, complete with their rules, schedules and rating system. You start near the bottom of the rankings, choose gear and lures to suit the conditions, collect better equipment as you go and work your way up until you are competing against Mark Davis himself.

The feel is arcade-friendly rather than punishing, so casting, working a lure and fighting a bass to the boat are easy to pick up, while the tournament structure gives every day on the water a goal. A multiplayer mode lets a friend join in, which makes it a relaxed alternative to the louder sports games on the shelf.

It is a slice of the early-2000s fishing-game boom on home consoles, a genre that has nearly disappeared from retail since, and a pleasant reason to plug in the PS2 on a quiet evening.
