Item Description

Shrinking the whole cast down to toy size turned out to be the perfect trick for a handheld Mario Party. When Mario and his friends find a crystal that has fallen from the sky, Bowser wants it, along with the four others still out there, badly enough to zap them with a shrinking spell. The tiny heroes suddenly find themselves racing across enormous everyday places: Wiggler's Garden, Toadette's Music Room, DK's Stone Statue, Kamek's Library and, fittingly, Bowser's Pinball Machine. Seen from a few inches tall, a bookshelf or a flower bed becomes a full-scale adventure, and each board is built around that sense of scale.

Story Mode turns those five boards into a proper campaign. Each one runs ten turns, and to move on you have to finish as the Superstar and then beat the board's boss in a showdown minigame: a Piranha Plant, a Hammer Bro, Dry Bones, Kamek and finally Bowser himself. Solo players get a real reason to play through the boards rather than a string of disconnected matches, and the boss fights give every stage a satisfying finish line.

The 73 minigames are where the DS hardware gets a workout. Some are classic button-and-D-pad contests, others ask you to trace, tap and swipe with the stylus, and a few want you to blow into the microphone. A separate Puzzle mode collects brain-teaser games, and Party mode supports two to four players from a single game card through DS Download Play, which made it about as easy as a multiplayer game could be to start up on a road trip full of DS owners.

Mario Party DS also marks the end of an era. It was the last Mario Party developed by Hudson Soft, the studio that created the series on the Nintendo 64, before the franchise moved to NDcube with Mario Party 9. Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Wario, Waluigi, Yoshi and Toad make up the roster, and the toy-box presentation gives every board a personality that still looks bright and lively on a DS screen. This is the Hudson formula at its most portable: free-for-all chaos, sudden star swings and friendships tested over a single minigame.

About the game

He's captured Mario and his friends in his pursuit of a crystal that the group collected when it fell from the sky, and he doesn't hesitate to shrink them to miniature size to get rid of them and get his hands on the other four crystals. The mini-heroes have to find the crystals before he does, making their way through giant environments filled with enormous creatures. The single-player campaign takes place in five different settings, each of them ending with a boss. As usual, players have to collect coins and stars, at the same time escaping dangers such as Piranha Plants and other classic creatures from the Mario universe.
