Item Description

Mario Party 10 has a mode built around ganging up on your friends, and it is wonderful. In Bowser Party, one player picks up the Wii U GamePad and becomes Bowser himself, rolling multiple dice to chase down a team of up to four rivals on Wii Remotes as they travel the board together. Every turn becomes a frantic pursuit, and when Bowser catches up he drags the team into a minigame designed to drain their hearts. It is asymmetric multiplayer in the best Wii U tradition, and the trash talk from whoever holds the GamePad is half the fun.

The standard Mario Party mode continues the format introduced in Mario Party 9: everyone rides the same vehicle around the board, taking turns at the dice, grabbing Mini Stars and dodging hazards across boards like Mushroom Park, Haunted Trail, Whimsical Waters, Airship Central and Chaos Castle. Then there is amiibo Party, designed around Nintendo's amiibo figures, which brings back the classic style of separate pieces moving around a board and buying stars, on compact boards themed to the figure you use. It is a neat nod to fans of the older games.

The minigames are the reason people keep coming back: quick, colorful contests that swing from button-mashing scrambles to careful timing tests and team challenges, played with a roster that includes Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Yoshi, Wario, Waluigi, Toad, Toadette and Rosalina. NDcube, the studio that took over the series with Mario Party 9, keeps things brisk, and the shared-vehicle boards wrap up far faster than the marathon board games of the GameCube years.

This is the Wii U's only Mario Party, and the only entry that treats the GamePad as an extra seat at the table, giving Bowser Party a five-player, one-against-four setup built specifically for this hardware. For a game night with a full couch and one Wii U, few discs are a better fit.
