Item Description

Waluigi Pinball sums up what makes Mario Kart DS so much fun: racers shot out of a launcher onto a neon pinball table, weaving between giant steel balls on the way to the finish. It is one of sixteen brand-new courses here, and Nintendo paired them with sixteen retro tracks drawn from the four earlier Mario Kart games, splitting the lineup into a Nitro Grand Prix and a Retro Grand Prix. Every Mario Kart since has followed that structure, and it started on this dual-screen handheld.

The racing itself holds up beautifully. Eight drivers are available from the start, each with a pair of karts, and more characters and karts unlock as you win cups, including R.O.B. and Dry Bones in their first Mario Kart appearances. The bottom screen can show a live map with every rival and incoming item, which makes it far easier to see a Red Shell coming. New items joined the arsenal too: the Blooper, which squirts ink across opponents' screens, and the Bullet Bill, which turns you into an autopiloted missile. The powerslide mini-turbo system ran deep enough that competitive players turned it into snaking, the much-debated technique of chaining boosts down straightaways.

Mario Kart DS also packed in more single-player content than the series had offered before. Mission Mode sets specific challenges, such as collecting coins or driving through gates against the clock, and caps each level with a boss fight. The battle modes include Balloon Battle, where you can blow into the DS microphone to inflate your balloons, and Shine Runners, a scramble to grab and hold Shine Sprites as the clock counts down. An emblem editor lets you draw a custom logo that appears on your kart. Local wireless races support up to eight players, and Download Play lets friends join from a single game card.

It was also the first Mario Kart built for online racing through Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, a service that has long since been shut down, and it became one of the best-selling games on the system. Today its appeal is the fully featured local experience: fan-favorite courses like Tick-Tock Clock, Airship Fortress and Delfino Square, tight handling, and a Mission Mode that gives solo players a real campaign. In a DS library, this is the racing game everything else gets measured against.

About the game

Mario Kart DS is the continuation of the long running racing game series that began on the Super Nintendo. It features 16 new tracks as well as 16 tracks from the previous 4 games, with each set split up into the Nitro and Retro Grand Prix respectively. Eight racers are initially available, each with two go-karts to choose from. A number of characters and additional karts are also available to unlock. New items have been added to the arsenal, including a Blooper squid that squirts ink onto the screens of other players and a Bullet Bill power up that transforms the player into a giant, fast-travelling bullet on autopilot.
