Item Description

A year after Clutch Hitter, Sega came back to the diamond with The Majors: Pro Baseball, a 1992 Game Gear cartridge developed by I.T.L. that set out to give handheld players a fuller, more simulation-minded game of ball. The name says what it was aiming for: not just a quick batting challenge, but a proper game of baseball on the backlit screen.

The core of it is the classic duel between pitcher and hitter. On the mound you pick your pitch and try to keep the batter guessing, and at the plate you time your swing and try to drive the ball into the gaps, then the game hands you control in the field and on the bases. It is listed with both single-player and multiplayer play, so the matchup could be human against human as well as against the computer, which is where any baseball game gets its best rivalries.

The Majors belongs to the early years of the Game Gear sports library, when Sega was building out its handheld with games for every season, and it shows how quickly handheld baseball moved from simple arcade fun toward something closer to the home-console experience. Few people remember it today, and that is part of what makes it an interesting find.

For collectors chasing Sega's early handheld sports lineup, it pairs naturally with Clutch Hitter, and for anyone who simply wants a few innings on original hardware it is a straightforward, likable baseball game from the Game Gear's early days.
