Item Description

Magmatic Hellkite is a dragon that punishes greedy mana bases. The four-mana 4/5 flier arrives and destroys target nonbasic land an opponent controls; that player then searches for a basic land, which enters tapped with a stun counter on it. They get a replacement land, but it stays out of commission for an extra turn, so the Hellkite costs them a land drop's worth of tempo while you start swinging in the air.

That makes it a nasty surprise in Commander, where tables are full of shocklands, fetchlands and utility lands, and a natural fit for Dragon decks and any red build that wants an efficient flier. Tarkir: Dragonstorm is a set built around dragons, and this Hellkite fits right in with its showcase presentation of Rafal Wechterowicz (Too Many Skulls) artwork, while the flavor text pictures the beast gulping from a lava flow before spewing molten rock at its prey.
