Nothing tests a friendship like accidentally electrocuting your best friend while trying to heal him. Magicka 2 is built around that kind of glorious chaos, and Pieces Interactive's 2015 sequel to the cult PC hit launched on PC and PlayStation 4 together, bringing the series to consoles for the first time. Decades after the Wizard Wars nearly wiped out their order, a handful of surviving wizards set out across Midgård with Vlad, the series' guide who insists, to everyone's disbelief, that he is definitely not a vampire.
Instead of picking spells from a menu, you build them. Eight elements, water, life, shield, cold, lightning, arcane, earth and fire, are mapped to the controller, and you queue up to five of them before casting, so a steam beam, a frozen boulder or a ring of lightning-charged mines is a matter of combination rather than unlocking. Certain sequences unleash Magicks, powerful set-piece spells like reviving a fallen ally or calling down a thunderstorm. The system is deep enough that skilled players improvise solutions on the fly and loose enough that a panicked button-mash produces something spectacular, usually at exactly the wrong moment.
Friendly fire is always on, and that is the point. Spells hit allies as hard as enemies, so a co-op session for up to four wizards turns into a running comedy of accidental immolations, hurried revivals and loud recriminations. Artifacts let you remix the rules, raising the difficulty or changing how the game behaves, and Challenge mode throws waves of enemies at the group for score. The campaign's humor leans on fantasy parody, pop-culture jokes and the made-up gibberish the wizards speak, a Magicka tradition.
Played solo, it is a clever action puzzle about reading a fight and building the right spell. With three friends on the couch, it becomes a party game where the best moments are the ones nobody planned, and where the wizard who set the whole team on fire never quite lives it down.
