Item Description

Madden NFL 99 is where the modern Madden really begins. EA Tiburon's 1998 release was the first football game ever to include Franchise mode, the feature that lets you run a team across 15 seasons, drafting, trading, signing and cutting players as your roster ages and evolves. Every Madden since has been built on that idea, and here is the game that started it.

On the field, the PlayStation version moved to new high-resolution polygon graphics, with fresh animations including wrap-up tackles and players tracking the ball with their heads, plus 250 new motion-captured moves. John Madden and Pat Summerall handle commentary, the rosters reflect the 1998 NFL season, and an Arcade Mode turns the hits up to cartoonish levels for anyone who just wants to lay out a receiver. Classic teams like the 1978 Steelers and the 1985 Bears are on the roster too, perfect for settling decades-old arguments, and with two Multitaps the game supports up to eight players at once.

It sold more than a million PlayStation copies and was the best-selling PlayStation sports game in North America in 1998, though not every critic was convinced, with some feeling GameDay still had the edge that year. That rivalry is part of the fun of revisiting it now: this is late-90s football at its most competitive, when EA and Sony were trading blows every fall.

Every modern Franchise and Connected Franchise mode traces back to this disc's career mode, and Madden 99 keeps the 1998 season frozen in time alongside it.
