Item Description

Alex wants nothing more than to become a Dragonmaster like his hero Dyne, and in the sleepy village of Burg that dream seems about as realistic as flying. Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete follows what happens when he chases it anyway, setting out with his childhood friend Luna, his winged companion Nall and the treasure-hungry Ramus to face the trials of Lunar's four dragons, only to be pulled into a war against the mysterious Magic Emperor.

This is Game Arts' remake of the 1992 Sega CD original, rebuilt for the Saturn and PlayStation and brought to North America in 1999 by Working Designs. The world was redrawn, the story and dungeons were reworked, and the anime cutscenes that made the Sega CD game famous were expanded into nearly an hour of animation, giving Alex and Luna's journey the feel of a favorite TV series. Luna's songs, performed in English for the localization, are what many players remember first.

Battles are turn-based, with characters moving around the field to reach their targets, and dungeon enemies are visible rather than random, so you choose when to fight. The supporting cast is a joy: Nash, the vain young mage from Vane; Mia, the shy heir to its Magic Guild; Kyle, the hard-drinking bandit; and Jessica, a priestess who hits as hard as she heals. Noriyuki Iwadare's score ties it together, bright and adventurous in town and sweeping whenever the story turns serious.

Working Designs' script is unmistakably theirs, full of jokes and asides that make the party feel like old friends, and the release built a reputation as a high point of the publisher's catalog. For many players it was a first taste of the Lunar saga and proof that a console RPG could feel as personal as a cherished anime. It is the natural starting point before Eternal Blue, and a cornerstone of Working Designs' PlayStation library.
