Item Description

Alex just wants to be a hero. A farm boy from the sleepy village of Burg, he grew up in the shadow of Dyne, the legendary Dragonmaster, and dreams of following in his footsteps. Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete turns that simple wish into one of the warmest adventures of the 32-bit era, a coming-of-age story about friendship, first love and the courage it takes to leave home, set in a world where dragons still live and magic is prized above all else.

The heart of the game is its cast. Luna, Alex's childhood friend with a voice that seems to hold some deeper secret, travels at his side along with Nall, the wisecracking winged creature who is never short of an opinion. Along the way they gather the brash merchant Ramus, the arrogant young magician Nash, the sorceress Mia, the fiery priestess Jessica and the rough-edged Kyle, and the bickering and banter between them carries the story through. Standing against them is the Magic Emperor, whose rise drives the plot toward a series of affecting turns.

Battles are turn-based, but positioning matters: characters move across the battlefield, so reach and spacing come into play in a way most RPGs of the era skipped. Game Arts rebuilt the 1992 Sega CD original from the ground up for this version, with redrawn graphics, a reworked story and nearly an hour of animated cutscenes that still look lovely. Noriyuki Iwadare's soundtrack, including Luna's vocal songs, ranks with the finest on the system, and the voice acting gives the characters real personality.

Working Designs brought it to North America in 1999 with a famously playful localization and a lavish presentation that made it a cult favorite among PlayStation RPG fans. It sits among the system's most fondly remembered role-playing games, and it is the version of Lunar that most players think of first: big-hearted, beautifully animated and still a joy to play from Burg to the final battle.
