Item Description

Every corner of Mournstead exists in two worlds at once, and you carry the lamp that lets you see both. Lords of the Fallen is CI Games' 2023 reboot of its 2014 action RPG, rebuilt from scratch by Hexworks in Unreal Engine 5, and it casts you as a Dark Crusader in a land suffering under the shadow of Adyr, the demon god. Your Umbral Lamp can peer into the realm of the dead, carry you across into it, and even tear the souls out of enemies standing in the world of the living.

That dual-world idea touches everything. Axiom, the realm of the living, is a grim medieval land of crumbling cathedrals, fortresses and plague-ridden villages, while Umbral is its nightmarish reflection, crawling with horrors and hiding paths, bridges and platforms that simply do not exist on the other side. Dying in Axiom does not end the fight right away: you are dragged into Umbral for a second chance, but the longer you linger there, the more dangerous it becomes. Exploration turns into a constant puzzle of when to look, when to cross and when to run.

Underneath sits the familiar Soulslike formula of stamina management, punishing bosses, an interconnected map that loops back on itself and a currency you must recover after death. Melee, ranged and magic builds all have room to shine, and Vestige Seeds let you plant your own resting points at specific spots, a clever twist on the bonfire tradition. The game was also designed around seamless two-player co-op, with the whole campaign built to be shared.

Its ambition earned it a passionate following among genre fans, and the Axiom and Umbral mechanic gives it an identity that feels distinct from FromSoftware's own games rather than a copy of them. If Dark Souls and Elden Ring have left you hungry for another gothic, unforgiving world to master on PS5, Mournstead's two layers give you plenty to learn, and plenty to fear.
