Item Description

Hold up the lantern and the world splits in two. In Lords of the Fallen, HEXWORKS' 2023 reboot of the 2014 action RPG, every step through the land of Mournstead happens in two overlapping realities: Axiom, the realm of the living, and Umbral, the realm of the dead. Raise the Umbral lamp and you can peer into that second world, spotting bridges and paths that do not exist in Axiom, or cross over entirely when the way forward is blocked.

It is a clever twist on the Soulslike formula, and it changes how death feels. Falling in Axiom does not end your run; it drops you into Umbral for a second chance, a grim, grasping realm where enemies keep coming the longer you linger and the only way out is to find a path back to the living. The lamp doubles as a weapon, too. Its Soulflay ability tears the soul out of an enemy, dragging foes into reach or revealing hidden secrets. Combat is weighty and deliberate, with blades, axes, hammers, bows and magic to shape a build, and Vestige seedlings let you plant your own checkpoints at carefully chosen spots.

You play a Dark Crusader charged with cleansing the five Beacons that hold back the demon god Adyr, a thousand years after the events of the first game. Built in Unreal Engine 5, Mournstead is a sprawling gothic world of ruined cathedrals, fog-choked fens and crumbling fortresses, and its interconnected layout loops back on itself in the best Souls tradition. Choices made along the way steer the story toward different endings, and the game was designed with seamless co-op so a second player could join an entire campaign.

Launch reviews praised the dual-realm design and the art direction while flagging rough performance and punishing enemy placement, and HEXWORKS spent the following year patching and rebalancing the game substantially. On PlayStation 5 it makes a strong case for itself among Soulslikes that have their own big idea rather than borrowing FromSoftware's, and nothing else in the genre makes familiar ground feel quite so unsettling as the moment you lift the lamp and see what is standing next to you on the other side.
