What if Frodo had failed? The Lord of the Rings: Conquest builds its best idea around that question: after a heroic campaign through the film trilogy's great battles, it hands you the armies of Mordor and lets you rewrite the ending in Sauron's favor, with the One Ring recovered and the free peoples of Middle-earth next in line.

Pandemic Studios, the team behind Star Wars: Battlefront, brought that large-scale formula to Middle-earth for Electronic Arts in 2009. Rather than a single soldier, you fight as one of four classes and switch as the battle demands: Warriors for heavy sword combos, Archers raining arrows from the walls, Scouts slipping behind enemy lines with stealth and explosive satchel charges, and Mages hurling lightning, healing allies and raising protective shields. At key moments you take control of a hero, from Aragorn, Legolas, Gandalf and Éowyn on the side of good to Saruman, the Witch-King, the Balrog and Sauron himself.

The good campaign marches through famous clashes including the fights for Rohan and Minas Tirith, while the evil campaign turns those same landmarks into targets. Allies ride horses and the forces of darkness ride wargs, trampling foot soldiers until a solid hit knocks them from the saddle, and the chaos of a crowded battlefield has real Battlefront energy. Reviews at the time were mixed, with critics wanting more depth and a longer campaign, but the sheer spectacle of swapping classes mid-siege still has plenty of appeal.

Its online modes, which once hosted Capture the Ring and hero battles for up to 16 players, were switched off years ago, so the way to enjoy it today is the way many players did back then: two-player split-screen on one PS3, tackling the campaigns together. For a Tolkien fan, the chance to stomp across Middle-earth as the Balrog is reason enough to dust it off.
