Item Description

Loch Mare starts small and grows the more you use it. For two mana it arrives as a 4/5 Horse Serpent carrying three -1/-1 counters, so it begins life as a modest 1/2. Each counter is fuel: pay {1}{U} and remove one to draw a card, or pay {2}{U} and remove two to tap target creature and put a stun counter on it, keeping that creature down through its next untap.

Here is the clever part. Every activation sheds -1/-1 counters, so the more cards you draw and the more blockers you lock down, the closer it climbs to its full 4/5. Once the counters are gone you have a sizeable blue body that has already paid for itself in cards and tempo. Flicker effects reset it with a fresh set of counters to spend, and in Commander it is a mana sink that turns spare mana into steady value.

Lorwyn Eclipsed returns Magic to the plane of Lorwyn, whose shadowy Shadowmoor side made -1/-1 counters a signature mechanic, and the name nods to the water-horse legends of Scotland's lochs. This is the Lorwyn Eclipsed printing, collector number 57, a mythic illustrated by Chris Rahn, in non-foil.
