Item Condition

Game only: the cartridge in a protective holder, no box or manual. This is a PAL-region cartridge made for PAL NES systems; it may need a region-modified console or compatible hardware to play on a North American (NTSC) NES. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

A bell-throwing boy who scrambles up walls and across ceilings, a fire-breathing dragon, a hulking stone golem and a mouse small enough to slip through gaps nobody else can reach: Little Samson hands you four heroes and lets you swap between them on the fly. Developed by Takeru and published by Taito in 1992, it arrived just as the Super NES was taking over living rooms and went largely unnoticed at the time. That is a shame, because it is a strong contender for the best-looking, best-playing action platformer the NES ever received.

The opening stages introduce each hero alone, a smart way to teach their strengths before the team comes together. Samson is the all-rounder, quick on his feet and able to scale walls and cling to ceilings while pelting enemies with magic bells. Kikira the dragon can flutter over gaps and breathe fire, Gamm the golem is slow but hits hard and soaks up punishment that would finish the others, and K.O. the mouse is fragile yet tiny enough to creep through passages no one else fits. Each hero carries a separate life bar, so deciding who to send into a dangerous room is a real tactical choice, and the stages are built so that every member of the team earns moments to shine.

Then there is the presentation. Late in the console's life, Takeru coaxed large, fluidly animated sprites, detailed backgrounds and inventive bosses out of the hardware, the kind of work that would not look out of place on a 16-bit system, and the controls are as tight as anything Capcom was making at the time. The story is a straightforward fantasy quest to save the kingdom, but the craft in every stage makes it feel far grander than that.

This is the PAL release made for European NES systems, which gives it extra appeal for collectors building a PAL library or anyone who wants the game in its European form. Its reputation has grown enormously over the years, and it is now mentioned in the same breath as Kirby's Adventure and the best of the NES Mega Man games as proof of what the system could do in its final years.
