Picture Kazuma Kiryu's face under a samurai topknot, a katana in one hand and a revolver in the other, and you have the irresistible premise of Like a Dragon: Ishin! Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio's historical spin-off first appeared in Japan in 2014 and stayed there for nearly a decade, a famous gap in the series for Western fans. This 2023 remake, rebuilt in Unreal Engine 4 and published by Sega, finally brought it overseas, recasting the familiar Yakuza ensemble as real figures of the Bakumatsu, the turbulent final years of the Tokugawa shogunate in the 1860s.

Kiryu's likeness plays Sakamoto Ryoma, a swordsman from Tosa who watches his mentor cut down by an assassin and is then framed for the killing himself. The only clue is the killer's Tennen Rishin fighting style, the signature technique of the Shinsengumi, so Ryoma takes a false name and joins Kyoto's feared police force to hunt the culprit from the inside. It is a story of political intrigue, betrayal and loyalty, and series regulars turn up in inspired roles. Seeing Goro Majima reborn as the brilliant, unhinged Okita Soji is worth the trip on its own.

Combat is built around four styles you switch between freely: Brawler for bare-knuckle street fights, Swordsman for katana duels, Gunman for revolver play, and Wild Dancer, a flamboyant mix of blade and pistol that turns a crowd of thugs into a stage show. Trooper cards layer special abilities on top, many of them featuring faces from across the wider series, and the Shinsengumi dungeon missions give the action an RPG-style hunt for loot and better gear to forge and upgrade.

And because this is a Ryu Ga Gotoku game, the side content is enormous. Ryoma can farm the land and cook meals in his Another Life with Haruka, sing karaoke, race chickens, go fishing and gamble at cho-han tables, while dozens of substories mix period drama with the studio's trademark absurd humor. On PlayStation 5 the remake's sharper visuals and quick loading make old Kyoto a pleasure to wander. If you have followed Kiryu's modern-day saga, Ishin! is the missing chapter: the same big heart and wild tone, transplanted into samurai-era Japan.
