Item Description

Three years before Max Caulfield came home to Arcadia Bay, Chloe Price was a sixteen-year-old with a dead father, a stepfather she couldn't stand and a chip on her shoulder the size of Oregon. Life Is Strange: Before the Storm, developed by Deck Nine and published by Square Enix, is her story: a prequel that follows Chloe through the spring she met Rachel Amber, the popular, magnetic Blackwell Academy student whose disappearance hangs over the original game. Where the first Life Is Strange was about Max and Chloe, this one is about Chloe and Rachel, and about the friendship that turned Chloe into the blue-haired firebrand players already knew.

There is no rewind this time. Chloe's power is her mouth, and the game's Backtalk system turns arguments into a kind of verbal duel: pick the right insult at the right moment and you can talk a bouncer out of your way or a teacher into letting something slide, pick wrong and the conversation collapses on you. The rest plays like the series at its best, exploring Arcadia Bay's junkyard, mill and campus, poking through Chloe's sketchbook, making choices that ripple through later episodes and tagging the world with graffiti where the first game had Max's photographs. Daughter, the British band, wrote an original score that gives the whole thing its ache.

The complete season runs three episodes, Awake, Brave New World and Hell Is Empty, released from August to December 2017, and the Limited Edition adds the bonus episode Farewell, a short, quietly devastating return to a thirteen-year-old Max and Chloe on the day before everything changed. The set also includes the first episode of the original Life Is Strange, an outfit pack and Mixtape Mode, which lets you build playlists from the soundtrack over scenes from the game.

This is the PlayStation 4 Limited Edition, the boxed collector's release of the prequel: the game in its case, a hardcover art book of Deck Nine's concept work and the original soundtrack on CD, all inside the printed collector's box. For anyone who finished the original and wanted to understand Chloe, this is where the rest of her story lives.
