Item Description
Start the game with it already on the battlefield, and Leyline Axe changes the math of every combat from turn one. If it is in your opening hand, you may begin the game with it in play, skipping its four-mana cost entirely. The equipped creature gets +1/+1, double strike and trample, and moving it costs three mana.
Double strike is the headline. Even a modest creature deals damage twice, and trample spills the excess past blockers, so a 3/3 wearing the Axe becomes a 4/4 that deals 8 damage a turn and shrugs off chump blocks. It is colorless, so it fits any deck, and it shines on creatures with lifelink, +1/+1 counters or combat-damage triggers that fire once for each strike. In Commander, a free piece of Equipment on turn zero is a great head start for Voltron and aggressive builds.
This is the Foundations printing, collector number 129, illustrated by Edgar Sánchez Hidalgo and offered here in non-foil. Foundations launched in late 2024 as Magic's long-term core set, and the Axe's flavor text sets a suitably epic tone: “It awaits a worthy wielder.”
