Hearing Ian McKellen's Gandalf thunder "You shall not pass!" while a LEGO wizard wobbles on a brick bridge is a very particular kind of joy, and LEGO The Lord of the Rings is built on moments like that. Traveller's Tales took Peter Jackson's three films and rebuilt them in plastic, using dialogue and music lifted straight from the movies so the drama plays straight while the minifigures supply the slapstick.

The adventure follows the Fellowship from the Shire to Mount Doom across all three films, through the Mines of Moria, the walls of Helm's Deep and the fields outside Minas Tirith. As in the best LEGO games, every hero has a job: Legolas handles archery and nimble elven leaps, Gimli smashes through what others can't, Gandalf's staff brings magic into the puzzles, and the hobbits turn out to be just as useful as the warriors. Swapping between them to crack each obstacle is the heart of the fun, and a second player can drop in at any time for co-op on the same screen.

What sets this entry apart from earlier LEGO games is Middle-earth itself. Between story levels you can travel a connected world, from Hobbiton and Bree to Rivendell and beyond, uncovering side quests, hidden collectibles and dozens of characters to unlock. Mithril bricks can be forged into special items, and an inventory lets your party carry useful gear from place to place, which turns the usual Free Play cleanup into a proper exploration game of its own.

It is a lovely way to revisit the trilogy, or to introduce younger players to it, with enough of the films' own voices and score to give the big moments real weight. Few licensed games manage to treat their source with this much affection and this much silliness at the same time, and the sight of a LEGO Gollum arguing with himself is worth the trip on its own.

Based on The Lord of the Rings motion picture trilogy, LEGO The Lord of the Rings follows the original storylines of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, taking players through the epic story events reimagined with the humor and endless variety of LEGO play. Trusted with the dangerous task to destroy an ancient magical ring that threatens all that is good, Frodo is forced to leave his peaceful home. But the ring wants to be found and the road to Mount Doom, the only place where it can be destroyed, will be perilous and riddled with Orcs and fouler things. To help Frodo, a Fellowship is formed —Aragorn the Ranger, Gandalf the Wizard, Legolas the Elf, Gimli the Dwarf, Boromir a Man of Gondor, and Frodo’s Hobbit friends Sam, Merry and Pippin.
