Item Description
Batman, Gandalf and Wyldstyle walking the yellow brick road together should not make any sense, and that is exactly the joy of LEGO Dimensions. Traveller's Tales built the 2015 game as LEGO's entry into the toys-to-life boom, and rather than staying inside one license it threw dozens of them into the same box: The Wizard of Oz, The Simpsons, Doctor Who, Back to the Future, Portal 2, Ghostbusters, Scooby-Doo, Jurassic World, Ninjago and the DC universe, all colliding in one story about worlds coming apart at the seams.
The villain driving it is Lord Vortech, voiced by Gary Oldman, who is tearing through the multiverse in search of the Foundation Elements. The game is designed around the LEGO Toy Pad, a light-up base where physical minifigures and buildable vehicles are placed to bring them into the game, and the clever part is how the pad becomes part of the puzzles. Its three zones glow in different colors, and moving figures between them can change a character's color to slip through matching barriers, shrink a hero to fit into tight spaces or open the way forward. It turns the coffee table into a control panel and gives the familiar LEGO rhythm of smashing, building and solving a hands-on twist no other LEGO game has.
Underneath, it is still a proper Traveller's Tales adventure, with two-player local co-op, character abilities to swap between and the slapstick humor the studio is known for, and the cross-franchise jokes land precisely because the characters are so mismatched. Each franchise also brings its own Adventure World, an open area full of side quests and collectibles themed to that series, so a growing figure collection keeps opening up new places to explore.
The real draw today is how big the whole thing grew. Over two years of releases, Dimensions expanded with full Level Packs and a second wave of franchises including Adventure Time, Fantastic Beasts, Knight Rider, Mission: Impossible, Sonic the Hedgehog and Gremlins, before new packs ended in 2017. That makes the Wii U disc the gateway to a finished, self-contained toy universe that collectors can still assemble piece by piece and play on the hardware it was made for, with the Toy Pad at the center of every session.
