Item Description

Somewhere above Earth, Brainiac is shrinking whole planets down to the size of a snow globe, and the only people who can stop him are Batman, the Justice League and a crew of villains who would normally be locked up in Arkham. That is the gloriously silly premise of LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham, Traveller's Tales' 2014 adventure that takes the LEGO DC games into deep space. Lex Luthor and the Joker end up in an uneasy truce with the heroes, and the chase runs from the Batcave and the Justice League's orbiting Watchtower out to the homeworlds of the Lantern Corps, each one drenched in its own Lantern color.

The roster passes 150 characters, and the fun is in how differently they play. Batman and Robin swap between specialized suits built for the job at hand, Green Lanterns conjure brick-built constructs on demand, and the heavy hitters of the Justice League each bring their own way of smashing, flying or building through a level. Every stage is designed for the series' drop-in, drop-out co-op, so a second player can grab a controller and join at any moment, with split-screen letting two players head off in different directions. Finish the story and the levels open up again in Free Play, where returning with the right characters uncovers the collectibles and secrets you could not reach the first time.

The other star is the cast list. Adam West plays himself, and tracking him down in every level is one of the game's running gags, while Kevin Smith and Conan O'Brien turn up as playable versions of themselves. Troy Baker returns as Batman alongside a deep bench of DC voice talent, and the script leans into the gentle, self-aware comedy that lets the LEGO games land with adults as well as kids. It arrived for Batman's 75th anniversary, and the game wears that celebration proudly with nods to decades of comics, cartoons and films.

Bigger and sillier than LEGO Batman 2, it is a bright, busy DC playground that a parent and child, or two old friends, can tear apart together on one couch. If the previous game brought the Justice League into Gotham, this is the cosmic sequel that goes all the way to the stars.
