Item Condition

Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original. Original inserts or paperwork shown in the photos are included; display stands and other photography props are not. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Every year the village of Minofu must hand one of its people over to the cult of Jagu as a sacrifice, and this year the chosen victim is Flare, the childhood friend of a barbarian named Gogan. He comes home too late to stop it, so the village elders give him Sting, the legendary axe, and send him into the mountains after her. It is a pulpy sword-and-sorcery setup, and The Legendary Axe plays it with total conviction.

The axe is the star. A flashing strength meter at the top of the screen decides how hard each swing lands; it empties when you attack and slowly refills, so every encounter is a choice between a flurry of weak chops and waiting for one devastating blow. Breaking open the small Jagu idols scattered through each zone reveals power-ups, crystal containers that raise the meter by a quarter, wings that speed up your swings, power balls that restore health, and the occasional extra life. That one mechanic gives the whole game a deliberate, satisfying rhythm.

Gogan's road runs through six zones of dark forest, caverns, mountain plateaus and fortresses, crowded with fire-spitting frog men, bouncing amoeba creatures, rock men and web-shooting giant spiders. The cult's guardians wait at the end of each zone, from a pair of possessed grizzly bears to a magical boulder, a swarm of flying Aqua Lungs and the shield-and-spear-wielding Punjabbis, and four continues give you a fighting chance against them.

Released in Japan as Makyō Densetsu by Victor Musical Industries, The Legendary Axe launched alongside the TurboGrafx-16 in North America in August 1989 and immediately became a showcase for what the new console could do. Electronic Gaming Monthly named it the best TurboGrafx-16 game of 1989, and VideoGames & Computer Entertainment went further, naming it Video Game of the Year across every console. Big, detailed sprites and a varied soundtrack still make it a highlight of the launch era, and the natural first stop before its very different sequel.
