Item Description

For most of Dawn of the Dragon, Spyro and Cynder are literally inseparable. The dark dragon Malefor has bound them together with glowing energy chains, and that tether shapes the whole finale of the Legend of Spyro trilogy: two dragons who began the saga on opposite sides now fight and fly side by side while the world sinks into darkness around them.

French studio Étranges Libellules took over for this third chapter and opened the world up. Free flight is available at any time, a first for the series, so battles move from the ground into the air and levels sprawl wider, with more room to explore and gems to hunt. A second player can take control of Cynder for co-op, or one player can switch between the two dragons. Spyro commands fire, electricity, ice and earth and hits harder, while Cynder wields poison, fear, wind and shadow and moves faster. Blue gems upgrade your moves, and collectible Dragon Armor adds another layer to build around.

The story picks up three years after The Eternal Night, with the pair freed from their crystal prison and escaping the Catacombs with the help of Hunter. It builds through the defense of the dragon city of Warfang against Malefor's forces and a city-devouring Golem before the ancient Destroyer threatens to end the world entirely. The voice cast is remarkable for a family platformer: Elijah Wood as Spyro, Christina Ricci as Cynder, Gary Oldman as Ignitus, Mark Hamill as Malefor, Wayne Brady as Sparx and Blair Underwood as Hunter.

Critics were lukewarm at release, with complaints about the camera and combat, but the game holds a unique place in Spyro history: it closed the Legend of Spyro continuity before the franchise was rebooted as Skylanders in 2011. If you followed Spyro and Cynder through A New Beginning and The Eternal Night, this is the confrontation with Malefor the trilogy was building toward, and a darker, more cinematic Spyro than the PlayStation originals ever attempted.
