Two months after the events of the first game, Van Arkride is running Arkride Solutions on his own, until a crimson beast that mirrors his own monstrous Grendel form begins to stalk the Republic of Calvard. Trails Through Daybreak II, released in Japan as Kuro no Kiseki II: Crimson Sin, is the direct sequel to Nihon Falcom's fresh start for the series, and NIS America brought it West in 2025, leaving English-speaking fans closer to Japan's release schedule than ever.

Van, the Spriggan who takes the gray-area jobs nobody else will touch, is joined again by Agnès Claudel, whose hunt for the eight Genesis devices built by her great-grandfather, Professor Epstein, reaches its final piece. The sequel's boldest idea comes from the Genesis themselves: they can send a person back after death to take a different path, giving the story a looping structure in which the cast must relive events and fight for a better outcome. Familiar faces return, and the carefree swordswoman Shizuna steps further into the spotlight.

Combat keeps the hybrid system the first Daybreak introduced, where you can slash at monsters in real time on the field and then shift seamlessly into command battles built on Arts, Crafts and careful positioning. The sequel adds team-up EX-Skills, Quick Arts and Cross Charge counters, plus the Märchen Garten, a dreamlike optional dungeon for grinding levels and earning Shards that unlock cosmetics and music from earlier games. Downtime brings fishing and the card game Seven Hearts.

Reviewers singled out the strong prologue and the cast, calling the story a clear step up from the first Daybreak. Calvard is the series' most modern setting yet, a republic of cars, cinemas, immigrant neighborhoods and corporate intrigue, and Van's sardonic, morally flexible point of view gives it a noir edge earlier Trails heroes never had. Picking up right where the first game leaves off, it is the next chapter of the Calvard story and a chance to spend another long, satisfying stretch with the Arkride Solutions crew.
