Item Description

Few first-party PlayStation games aimed as high as The Legend of Dragoon. Sony's Japan Studio built a four-disc fantasy epic with pre-rendered backgrounds, lavish CG cutscenes and a story big enough to fill all of them, and released it in North America in 2000. It opens with Dart Feld coming home to the village of Seles to find it burned to the ground and his childhood friend Shana taken prisoner, and from that first rescue mission the war between the kingdoms of Serdio and Sandora grows into something far older and stranger.

Its signature idea is the Addition system. Instead of picking Attack and watching, you press the button in time with each strike of a combo, and a cleanly executed Addition chains into blows that hit harder with every input. Additions grow stronger the more you use them and new ones unlock as characters level, so learning the rhythm of each fighter's strings becomes a skill of its own. Some enemies counter mid-combo, which means you can never fully stop paying attention, and that makes even routine battles feel hands-on in a way most turn-based RPGs of the era did not.

Then there are the Dragoons themselves. Dart and his companions carry Dragoon Spirits that let them transform mid-battle into armored, winged warriors with their own timed attacks and elemental magic, and the transformation sequences are pure turn-of-the-millennium spectacle. The party is a memorable bunch, from the loyal knight Lavitz and the mysterious Rose to the gentle giant Kongol and the irrepressible Meru, and the plot digs into an ancient war between dragons, Dragoons and the Winglies to keep the twists coming disc after disc.

Reviews at the time were mixed, with critics measuring it against Final Fantasy VII, but players kept coming back, and over the years it built one of the most devoted cult followings of any PlayStation RPG. Fans still swap stories about finally nailing Dart's longest Addition strings and the boss fights that demanded them. Played on the original console, it is a big, earnest, late-90s adventure that takes timing seriously and rewards patience with some of the era's most extravagant set pieces.

About the game

The Legend of Dragoon is a Japanese-style RPG, visually reminiscent of Final Fantasy VII (pre-rendered backgrounds, 3D characters and battle scenes, CG animations to advance the story). Battle mechanics follow the traditional turn-based prototype, with a few additions such as critical attacks dependent on precise timing, and "dragoon" transformations, which allow access to powerful techniques. Game progression is largely linear, with the "world map" replaced by locations represented as connected dots.
