Legaia 2: Duel Saga lives and dies by its fists, and that is a good thing. Its battle system asks you to build attacks out of directional inputs, pressing up, down, left and right in sequence. String the right sequence together and your character launches into an Art, a named special move with its own animation and punch. Discovering those combos, then chaining them into bigger and bigger links, gives every fight a hands-on, puzzle-like satisfaction that most turn-based RPGs never attempt.

Developer Prokion layered plenty on top of that foundation. Using Arts builds up AP, and beyond the everyday Arts sit stronger Super Arts and Hyper Arts, Variable Arts that pair two characters for an even bigger strike, and Mystic Arts, the most powerful of all. Experienced fighters can fold several kinds of Arts into a single attack. Working out how to build the AP for a long combo on the fly is the game's great pleasure.

The story begins in the small village of Nohl, which depends on a magical crystal for its water. When the crystal is stolen and an eclipse floods the land with monsters, Lang, an orphaned rookie in the village militia, sets out to bring it back. He soon learns he is a Mystic, one of a group of outcasts bonded to spiritual beings called Origins, and he gathers a party along the way, among them the troubled girl Maya and the weathered martial artist Kazan. Small touches like equipment crafting, camping and a cooking system whose dishes temporarily boost your stats add warmth, and the score brings together Michiru Oshima, Hitoshi Sakimoto and Chrono Trigger's Yasunori Mitsuda.

The visuals show their age, and reviewers said as much, but the combat is the reason RPG fans keep seeking it out. It is a sequel in name and system rather than story, with a new world and cast, and a great way to experience the Legaia combo system on the PS2.

About the game

A magical crystal that supplies infinite water to the small village of Nohl is stolen, causing a solar eclipse. The resulting evil light fills the land with powerful monsters, placing the village's survival at stake. Now Lang, a rookie member of the Nohl militia, must fight his way across uncharted lands to recover the crystal and restore peace to the land.
