Item Description

Pinball lives or dies by the feel of the ball, and that is exactly where Digital Pinball: Last Gladiators earned its reputation. KAZe's Sega Saturn simulation launched in Japan in June 1995, ahead of its Western releases, and critics of the day singled out how faithfully it captured the behavior of a real machine.

Four original tables make up the game, each with its own fantasy theme: Gladiators, set in a roaring arena; Knight of the Roses, all medieval chivalry; Dragon Showdown; and Warlock, steeped in sorcery. Every table packs multiball and nine special bonus rounds, with finales carrying names like Gladiator Show, Necromancer, Banzai Showdown and Last Judgment, and clearing them all opens an Ultimate Round. Before each ball you choose one of three bonuses, such as a lit bonus round, a super kickback, an extra ball or a doubled playfield, which turns every plunge into a small strategic decision.

The appeal is pure flipper skill: ramps, lanes, bumpers and targets, and the long chase for a place in the Last Gladiators Hall of Fame. The game has had a remarkably long tail, too. KAZe followed it in Japan with the revised Ver. 9.7 in 1997, an iOS edition arrived in 2010, and new versions have been announced for modern platforms three decades after the original.

This Japanese Saturn release is a great find for import collectors filling out a Saturn library, and for pinball players who want to see where one of the most respected console pinball games of the 32-bit era began.
